There is Pain in the Knowing

The annual seal hunt is on in Canada . . .

Good St. Francis, you loved all of God's creatures.
To you they were your brothers and sisters.
Help us to follow your example
of treating every living thing with kindness.
St. Francis, Patron Saint of animals,
watch over the Harp Seals
and keep them safe and healthy.
Amen.

“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”

Heavenly Father, the bond we have with our friends of other species is a wonderful and special gift from You. We now ask You to grant our special animal companions your Fatherly care and healing power to take away any suffering they have. They trust in us as we trust in You. Give us, their human friends, new understanding of our responsibilities to these creatures of Yours. Our souls and theirs are on this earth together to share friendship, affection, and caring. Take our heartfelt prayers and bless these ill or suffering animals with healing Light and strength to overcome whatever weakness of body they have:
The Harp Seals and all animals being tortured, killed and sacrificed in the name of fashion, vanity, greed
Your goodness is turned upon every living thing; Your grace flows to all Your creatures; Your Light touches each of us with the reflection of Your love. Grant long and healthy lives to our special animal companions. Bless their relationships with us, and if You see fit to take them from us, help us to understand that they are not gone from us but only drawing closer to You. Grant our prayer through the intercession of good St. Francis of Assisi, who honored You through all Your creatures. Empower him to watch over our animal friends until they are safely with You in eternity, where we someday hope to join them in honoring You forever. Amen.

March 28, 2008: Canadian Fishermen Have Started
Killing 275,000 Harp Seal Pups

I love my Canadian neighbors, and I mean NO disrespect to you, my friends, across the river from me . . . I am sure many of you are against this cruelty . . . I am NOT attacking Canadian people - I am simply exposing a terrible thing endorsed by their government.

Horrible. Glad you reminded us about this awful ritual, Lindy. There is pain in the knowing, but it's necessary to feel pain if the alternative is to be spiritually deadened, one would like to hope anyway.

So L.A. Woman, eh? Can you reveal more?

It's beginning to feel like the New Sixties as others are also suggesting. The good, the bad, and the ugly, Years of Hope, Days of Rage . . .

I've always been against this. The clubbing (guns and knives hurt the fur's money value) of baby seals is a visceral symbol of humanity's ruthlessness against nature in the name of profit.

On a lighter note, I dug the Hair post. Rock on!

Thanks Erik. I agree, the alternative - the numbness, the deadened spirit is not an option for me.
I'll let you know about L.A. as soon as I know :)
These times are calling for the best and the worst of the sixties, seventies and eighties. The younger generations don't seem to have any sense of direction or real purpose (maybe it's all the chemicals in the food and the medications given to them to 'calm' their restless hearts . . . I don't know, but I do know they appear to be without definition and therefore are looking for something to relate to and define themselves . . . something like the 60's and so on.

Hey Eric in the 313 - don't get me started on the 'how' and the 'why.' I am so infuriated and disgusted and SAD. I work on this every year and if I could I would be right there on the ice between the vicious hunters and the seal pups. I cannot believe that with all the pressure and all the disgust with wearing fur for fashion (and we're not talking about Indians and Eskimos...we're talking about designers and wearers and hunters and governments who don't give a sh#t.)I can't believe it goes on as planned each and every year.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah - the hair post - now we CAN wear our hair any way we want - or not at all!

I'd be a hypocrite if I said the slaughter of a 1/4 million harp seal pups bothered me. I choose not to go down that route, cut the desire for the skins and then you'll cut the slaughter.

Maybe one day before the oil runs out then we'll live in an animal skin free world. But I find that I don't know anyone who has no leather, or skin of any kind Lindy, and a stand should have no compromise, either the skin of a cow is a precious as the skin of a harp seal or they are both up for fashion or practical use.

Peace

Hi Mark, thanks for your honesty - I understand what you're saying...
But we need to start somewhere and little by little we can end cruelty of all kinds.
I am appalled by all cruelty - and there is so much and it is all so horrible that one person cannot absorb it all and one mind can not wrap itself around it all...so we each need to do what we can when we can how we can to bring awareness to situations involving cruelty, starvation, diseases, etc.
I do not understand cruelty - and there is no NEED for it.
Yes, we all - most - wear leather...and for practical reasons...until something comes along that is better. For example, the coat I wear when riding is not leather - it is man-made materials that protect me better than leather...my boots are leather to protect my ankles and feet and so far I have not seen not heard of anything that would be better or equal. Most of my shoes are man-made materials...but some are not.
But I do not wear fur - I am not an Indian or an Eskimo...I don't need a big fur coat for warmth and protection and I certainly would not wear it for fashion knowing the SUFFERING and inhumane cruelty involved in its making.
I am not a vegan (yet - I have tried) but I do not eat much meat and I am knowledgeable and conscious of where my meat come from - I do not buy from nor support factory farms.
It's all about awareness, knowledge (is power) and consciousness.
I would never dump red paint on someone wearing a fur - I think that is ridiculous and hurtful and it only means that the animal now died in vain twice over - and a new coat will be purchased at the expense of more trapped minks and seals - both are skinned alive many times...the seals are club and skinned while still alive in many cases because the fur is better that way...is it warmer? is it more sacred? NO - it is prettier.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Fashion is in the eyes of the believer and followers. Death is in the eyes of those with full pockets and those wanting to fill their pockets _ it's about GREED not NEED; it's about VANITY not beauty - because beauty is LIFE and living, it's about fashion NOT practicality...
It all boils down to one step at a time...one voice to gather millions in song...one less NEED every day to lessen our NEEDINESS and greediness.
I respect your opinion - I grew up around hunters and fisherman - there is a huge difference in the WAY, the INTENT, the reasons for hunting and eating the meat...and hunting because one can get BIG money for deer pelts.
We have to draw lines at some pint that say...this is no longer a shade of gray...this is BLACK or this is WHITE.
That is why we here in the States do not eat dog and cat meat nor wear the fur from dogs and cats.
But in China - they do.
Cows are sacred in India.
Here, we they are treated so cruel beyond belief...unimaginable cruelty...
Here, a child has (or at least used to have) a better chance at a better life than in Africa...In Africa children have a better chance at dying from AIDS, starvation...
There is SO much, Mark, so much that needs to be done...so much thinking - thoughts- that need to be SHIFTED. And those changes only come with AWARENESS and KNOWLEDGE.
Remember - Dahmer mistreated animals - his cruel streak did not stop there...it grew more horrible each day - fed by evil thoughts that began with kicking a dog (as an example)
Thanks for stopping by and commenting - it means a lot to me. Thank you for be respectful while expressing your point of view.

That is truly sad. What are people thinking?!!!!!!! Here's hoping that it ends soon.

Lindy I had to look through my clothes before I spoke
1) leather belt
2) a leather vest that has meaning to me
3) one pair of leather shoes that are orthopedic and paid for by your tax dollars thank you for that

As near as I can tell these are the only animal skin clothes I wear almost forgot I do have a wallet that cost $5 that is leather.

You're preaching to the choir here, 90,000 neglected American babies (the report came out publicly yesterday by the CDC), Massive buffalo hunts that killed millions of the bison either for fur or to deprive indigenous populations of food.

Just in the modern age famine after famine in a world we knew could support every living creature upon it.

A world given us by whatever method you choose we are slowly killing.Even though we have the science today to save it and ourselves.

The list, as you so eloquently wrote a part of, goes on to the point of exhaustion.

Yet I can give no more, not to harp seals,Darfurs,Iraqi's,American troops, an immoral American justice system that incarcerates people of color five times the rate as whites and with harsher sentences for the same crime. And all the other evil in this world, because I am tired, in Spirit, soul and, body. All I can do is, if possible help them who cross my path.

The rest I think is God's way of saying "shrug" "learn or die" while I would prefer the former the latter seems the greater possibility. I can accept that as well.

Peace

Hi Michelle,
I don't know what anyone is thinking anymore - there is so much cruelty and not enough compassion - I don't think people are thinking at all - and definitely not 'feeling' either. Many zombies walking the planet...all who seem to love zombie films too - as there are always plenty of those showing around town.

Mark, I really appreciate you taking the time to check yourself out as well as your 'things.'
So many people 'speak' without thoughtfulness.
I understand and respect your 'tiredness.'
The most important thing is you help yourself first and then help those who cross your path when you are able.
That is honorable and right.
Those who work for bigger causes sometimes have farsightedness and fail to see the person, place or thing in front of their eyes.
It is so very beautiful when one human being helps out another even in the slightest way . . . a smile:) Those are in short supply these days.
So, I send you a SMILE :)
Thanks again...for your care and concern.
